OUTREACH There are many ways to reach out to others in our community, across the nation and throughout the world. Unless otherwise indicated, please contact Patrick Barredo, Pastoral Associate (pbarredo@holyrosaryseattle.org ) for more information.
Advent Giving Tree Each Advent season, a tree laden with Christmas wishes is on display in the church. Parishioners are invited to select a tag from the tree, purchase the gift on the tag, and return it before Christmas. This year the Giving Tree benefited Providence Regina House, Noel House, St. Martin de Porres Men’s Shelter, Matt Talbot Center, Youth Care’s Orion Center, St. Vincent de Paul, Elder Health Northwest, Catherine Booth House, Park West, and Holy Rosary Women’s Shelter.
Clothesline The Clothesline provides clothes for newborn to preschool, kids, youth, teenagers, women, and men. We sort donations on Mondays and Thursdays and are open Friday for people to shop. We are always in need of clothing. The clothesline is on the 2nd floor of the convent and appears very much like a department store. If you would like to volunteer with this important community ministry please contact Patrick.
Community Meal The Community Meal serves hot meals for low-income neighbors. Held quarterly, several area churches and agencies are uniting to facilitate this marvelous meal. To volunteer, contact Patrick.
Disabled Ministry Holy Rosary has a sharing closet full of medical supplies for those who are disabled or require medical assistance in their homes. It was started by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and is now being operated by Megan Vecchio. The medical supply closet has hospital beds, commodes, walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, and many other pieces of equipment that people might need. If you would like to help with providing medical equipment to those who need it, call Megan.
Friend-to-Friend Friend to Friend recruits and matches volunteers to visit (one-on-one) with elderly and disabled persons who live in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and retirement homes for the purpose of forming friendships. The volunteer friends make a commitment to visit at least twice a month for a minimum of one year. Anyone may volunteer. Visits may be short – 15 to 30 minutes. In West Seattle, visits can be made to Daystar Retirement Home, Fleming Home, Kenney Home, Life Care Center, Merrill Gardens, Park West Care Center, Providence Mt. St. Vincent Nursing Home, and The DePaul. Friends bring hope and joy. This is an exceptional intergenerational program. Parents may bring children on visits. Children learn respect, compassion, how to communicate with and have concern for other generations by watching how their parents treat the elderly and disabled. Consider the possibilities of making a new friend.
Giving Crib This program helps families in need all over Seattle. We collect new and gently-used items for children (toys, clothes, etc.) here at Holy Rosary. If you would like to help in this wonderful ministry, please contact Patrick for more information.
God's Green Earth Once a month volunteers clean, wash, cut, and bag vegetables and fruits for those in West Seattle who are living with AIDS/HIV. This produce acts as a nutritional supplement for low-income people. Contact Patrick if you would like to volunteer.
Grief Cards Losing a loved one is perhaps the most painful time in anyone’s life. Having the love and support of a caring community can ease the sorrow that death brings. Every month, dedicated volunteers send condolence cards to the family and friends of those who have died. If you would like to share your sympathy with others, please contact Cindy.
Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. We welcome all people to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable, houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 125,000 houses in more than 80 countries, including some 45,000 houses across the United States. Volunteers are needed to help with construction on Saturdays. You don’t have to be a skilled construction worker to be able to help out – everyone is encouraged to lend a hand! All Construction Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. All on-site volunteer days are for full days from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. We work rain or shine and hope our volunteers do to. The first step to volunteering with Seattle Habitat for Humanity is to attend a Volunteer Orientation. Contact Tony Fragada about how you can sign up to help build a home for a family!

We also support elderly members of the parish and those who are in need of extra help with a hot meal due to illness or unexpected crisis. If you are the parent of a new addition or are experiencing a hardship and would like a complimentary dinner, please contact Jodi. Volunteers are always needed and welcome for this ministry. If you are interested please contact Jodi.
Missions Board Parishioners are provided opportunities for mission exposure in third world and developing countries. Holy Rosary is especially active in Kenya and Uganda. We have traveled to Jamaica, Kenya, Uganda and the Philippines in the past five years. Another mission trip is planned for May 2005 to the Philippines and the summer of 2006 to Uganda. The parish has contributed to the construction of a church and two medical clinics, and to providing educational opportunities. Requisites for a missioner are a good heart, good head, strong faith, and a spirit of adventure.

Orion Center Dinners The Orion Center, a multi-service facility for homeless youth ages 12-21, provides immediate and developmental services such as case management, health education, the Orion School - an on-site Seattle Public School - food and clothing banks, and adventure-based therapy. The Orion Center also has limited services for youth ages 22- 24 and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hundreds of volunteers continue Orion Center's collaborative spirit by lending their time and expertise to help this vulnerable population grow up. More than 350 volunteers from churches, homes, and organizations provide hot, home-cooked dinners for youth at the Orion Center five nights a week. There are two groups of Holy Rosary parishioners who share the responsibility of providing dinner for the youth once a month. Each group purchases groceries, cooks and prepares the food, and then brings the meal downtown for the teens. If enough people are interested, a third group can be organized so that Holy Rosary may provide dinner more than once a month. If you are interested in finding out more about feeding homeless teenagers, contact the Parish Office.
Pax Christi Pax Christi strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing to the contact of Christian nonviolence. This work begins in personal life and extends to communities of reflection and action to transform structures of society. Pax Christi: rejects war, preparations for war, and every form of violence and domination; advocates primacy of conscience, economic and social justice, and respect for creation; commits itself to peace education in the rich tradition of the Catholic Church; works toward a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. Locally we are dialoging with Native American tribes and displaced urban population as we begin to better understand the relationship between modern culture and the natural resources that humanity shares together. Peace is more than a tool of the self-righteous; it’s a prayerful attitude that reveals God’s work in all of us.
Prayer Circle This group is available to pray for the various needs of the parish and the world. Often forgotten, this apostolate is essential to all the rest. If you are interested in joining this group or need their prayers, please contact Paula.
Soup Kitchen Twice a month volunteers prepare gallons of homemade soup for the Lazarus Day Center. There are many ways that parishioners can participate: prepare broth or base in your own home, join the “soupers” in the kitchen on soup days, or pick up and deliver insulated soup containers to and from the shelter on soup days. For further information please contact Bill.
St. Martin Sandwiches The St. Martin de Porres sandwich team makes 300 sandwiches every 1st Monday of the month. The ministry is currently comprised of about eight to ten parishioners from age 9 to 60. In addition we add homemade cookies or cupcakes made with special love from the school kids. If you would like to volunteer for this special community ministry please contact Susan.
St. Vincent de Paul This group of men and women carry on the charitable works of Christ after the example of St. Vincent de Paul. Material assistance, such as food, shelter, and clothing are provided, as well as caring companionship for those in need. Meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of the month.
West Seattle Churches Since 2002, Christian churches in West Seattle have met monthly to share how they respond to those who are in need. Resources are shared, social justice events are planned, and the churches most of all support one another in bringing hope to those who are hopeless. Meetings are hosted by a different church on the third Tuesday of every month. One of the ways Holy Rosary has helped has been through its involvement with Calvary Lutheran Church to sponsor Community Meals! If you would like to attend these ecumenical gatherings, please contact Patrick.
Women's Overflow Shelter Our shelter is open each Sat. and Sun. night with two trained volunteers (women or couples) staying with our guests. Volunteer drivers (male or female) transport the guests from Noel House (where they are screened) in the evening and return them in the morning. Hospitality volunteers also provide a healthy "snack" in the evening. To make this ministry work we need lots of volunteers (we train!). For information on all of the volunteer opportunities, please contact the Parish Office. |
